KAMERA SCHOOL BOOT CAMP

About Kamera School Bootcamp

Welcome to Kamera School Bootcamp, an exciting film training initiative brought to you by Slum TV Africa! At Kamera School, we’re dedicated to nurturing the next generation of storytellers and filmmakers from the vibrant community of Mathare, Nairobi, and beyond.

Our Roots: Slum TV Africa

Kamera School Bootcamp is proudly birthed from the rich history of Slum TV Africa, a grassroots media collective deeply rooted in the heart of Mathare, Nairobi. Founded in 2007, our parent organization was born with a profound mission in mind: to empower and train the youth of Mathare in the art of digital media production. Our motto has always been, “Films made by Mathare, in Mathare, for Mathare.”

Over the years, Slum TV has grown and expanded its reach, collaborating with young adults beyond Mathare to document life in the broader Eastlands region. In our journey, we’ve had the privilege of training over 150 passionate individuals and have collectively crafted more than 500 thought-provoking and captivating films.

Our Mission

The Kamera School Boot camp is a 12 Weeks training course in basic photography and video production for young people from underserved communities in Nairobi currently being offered by Slum TV to needy young people in Nairobi. The course aims to equip the trainees with skills in entrepreneurship, business, and media production to enable them to start their own businesses or provide service in the media sector.

Why Kamera School Bootcamp?

Young people living in informal settlements often face a range of challenges that can impact their well-being, opportunities and overall quality of life. Some of these challenges include limited education access and unemployment which sets them in a state of hopelessness hence leading them to engage in crime and drugs abuse/trafficking. The Kamera School Bootcamp aims to address this problem by providing them with valuable technical skills in media production and entrepreneurship. Research shows that such training can have a positive impact on the economic prospects of young people providing a “turn key” opportunity to create a business or to get a job.

Methodology

The teaching and learning methodology involves a mix of lectures, practical demonstrations, and hands-on projects exercises. The trainees are assessed through practical projects, presentations, and tests. Evaluation of the training course is done through feedback from the trainees and the success of their businesses.

Our curriculum is designed to provide comprehensive training in all aspects of film production, from concept to post-production, and everything in between.
