Slum TV is a grassroots media collective based in Mathare, Nairobi. The organisation was founded in 2007 to train young people from the neighbourhood in digital media production under the slogan; films made by Mathare, in Mathare, for Mathare. Since 2007 Slum TV has grown to work with young adults from, and to document life in, the broader Eastlands region. The organisation has trained over 150 individuals and produced more than 500 films.
Know MoreTraining is one of the programs offered at Slum TV, with a mission to capture, document and tell authentic stories on the lives of informal dwellers through film and photography, we place the tool of self representation on the hands of the young people from the slums. Initially the Slum TV trainings were only for the 20 slum TV members. Production training is our speciality.
We have handled logistically and financially challenging projects and through partnerships with other international and local agencies, we have been able to establish a close relationship. We are able to offer the best services based on our prime position in the industry. Our crew understands how different productions work, are flexible and can handle projects of all sizes.
Hand in hand with our Film production and Training programme, Slum TV exhibits its films in different forums and locations mainly the Goethe Institutte, Mathare slums and in other parts of Nairobi county. The aim of this programme is to raise people’s awareness both nationally and internationally on the lives of the informal settlement dwellers through film. This serves Slum TV’s inquisition on the effects of its screening program a well as a guide for Slum TV’s content development.
Slum TV's project consulting services extend beyond creative development to encompass the logistical and business aspects of filmmaking.
